There has been a significant development in the work of Spaxton Community Land Trust (SCLT) since the last newsletter. As many of you who are members of the CLT will know, the High Street site has been withdrawn from sale due to probate issues and will not be available in the foreseeable future.
The CLT still intends to achieve our aim of building the affordable homes needed by the village in a way that ensures community control and protects against wider development attempts. During the consultation stage it was established that the village had two preferred site options, the High Street site and the Parish owned land adjacent to the allotments, with little to choose between them.
We now intend to alter our focus to the parish land adjacent to the current working allotments. The CLT board has discussed this with our partners and having established that our Housing Association, builder and architects are all keen to continue the project the change of site was agreed at a CLT board meeting with a majority vote. We have sufficient funds to begin to carry out the necessary surveys on the new site and have been assured by Sedgemoor District Council that further financial support is available. At the last Parish Council meeting the Head of Terms that had been agreed with the Parish Council were reinstated as an agreement between us. The CLT will ask the architects to draw up new designs which will be shown to members and the community in due course. Initial proposals on the new site will be put to SCLT members at an Annual General Meeting on 15th October to explain the detail and obtain their support. Once our plans are at an appropriate stage later in the year, we will hold a wider public meeting. In the meantime, the board welcomes your comments, suggestions, and questions.
Mike Hodson.
